NERv is a Waterloo Institute of Nanotechnology start-up. NERv develops implantable biosensors that operate from within the human body. They are being developed to collect data about the body and send feedback to the doctor allowing medical care facilities to have a portable bio-lab able to assess critical changes in the human body.
The term NERv arises from how NERves carry stimulus from any point in the body and carries electrical signals to the brain. NERv however takes the stimulus from the body and sends it to the doctor. That's how Nanotechnology Engineering is Revolutionizing (NERv) the biomedical industry.
NERv's first product is a post-surgical implantable biosensor chip, designed to detect many of the common post-operative complications such as internal bleeding, Ischaemia, dangerous inflammation, septic shocks, blood poisoning, staple line breakage etc. The device incorporates technologies from the field of Chemistry, Nanotechnology, BioMEMS and Circuitry.
NERv has been designed to be placed inside the body (in-vivo) at the end of the operation prior to closure ex. Laparoscopies, Laparotomies, Cesarean Section, and Intestinal surgeries,etc. The chip is very small, provides instantaneous feedback and made entirely out of biocompatible materials. It relies on using many of the body's biomarkers to assess the body's condition.
